The 1910 School Magazine

Elsewhere, in this number, will be found a more extended notice regarding our late Master, Mr. George Gross. May we here point out that he was a splendid illustration of the affection that may grow between master and boys. His death took place during vacation — an added regret with us, who would have liked that the School, in its numbers, could have paid its last respects.

Recently, a circular was issued by the Head Master, desiring subscriptions to defray the cost of erecting a fence round the "Turf." The School is complying with the wishes of the Queensland Cricket Association, in turfing the wicket, as all Senior matches must be played on turf wickets. To leave the ground unprotected, however, after this improvement, is quite out of the question — hence the need for more money. These proposals, when accomplished, will retain the Turf for the School, not, as at present, the thoroughfare of the public. We do hope the response to the circular will make the whole matter quickly practicable.

In the first issue of the new year, there is always the noting of the final events of the old year, which, happening after the previous issue, can only receive this delayed method of record. There were the annual contests for the Chelmsford Cup with Maryborough in respect to cricket and rowing, and with Ipswich for cricket only, our school representatives visiting the other cities.

The President for 1910–11 was Mr. Reginald Heber Roe — the recently retired Head Master and founder of the Association — who was subsequently elected the OBA's Patron. (The President for 1909–10 had been Mr. P. J. O'Shea.) The Hon. Secretary in 1910 was Mr. A. T. Ellis (of 23 Albert Street, Brisbane); Mr. J. G. Nowlan took up the long Hon. Secretaryship from about 1911.
