Editorial (June 1930)

As time goes on, men come to school, learn a little, and then they disappear for a time. We hear of them again in their old age. It is then that they begin to realise what they have missed, for much of their enjoyment from literature is cut short, because they left school too soon. Now they are willing to give years of their life to give their children a more thorough education than they themselves obtained. Can we say truly that the child appreciates this? For the most part he is young and frivolous, and treats school as a training ground for his sporting activities. Doubtless this person may be very successful in the prime of life; but what of old age? He will not be able to appreciate the books which he reads then; he will not have many views concerning the philosophical side of life which old age always calls for. He will at least think of the time which he lost at school, and will try and atone for it by keeping his sons at school. The right proportion of study and sport is indeed hard to define, and the great curse of the age is that people will not settle down to the learning of the fundamental principles of everything they take up.

(The "Events and Achievements" notes record two developments of 1930: with the introduction of the new State Scholarship system about 200 new boys joined the School; and "with the introduction of voluntary training a School [Cadet] Corps has been formed under the command of Lieut. J. C. Deeney.")

OBA President's Report / Message (1930)

The Annual General Meeting (November 1930) was chaired by the President, Mr. Justice J. E. Broadbent, whose year's success the meeting attributed to his leadership "and to the untiring energy of their Secretary, Mr. J. G. Nowlan." The meeting noted that the list of past presidents was being compiled. Mr. H. McD. Russell was elected President for 1930–31 (he appears as President "H. M. Russell, M.L.A." in the 1931 issue).

A note on year designations

In this era, an Old Boy's year designation was the year he entered Grammar; the convention today is the year he finished. A boy who started in 1993 and finished in 1997 was (93) but is now '97.

For example: Tom Smith (93) Tom Smith '97
