EDITORIAL (1972)
Mike Boone

The year 1972 has been one of innovation and achievement for us at Brisbane Grammar School, surpassing the endeavours and products of previous years. We won our first undefeated premiership in G.P.S. football and took first place in G.P.S. swimming.

This year, too, has seen the introduction of the Radford Scheme at B.G.S. It is a new concept in education; however, whether it is an improvement over the external examination system remains to be seen. The recently formed Students' Representative Council has worked hard to produce the school's first Open Day Carnival, encouraging further student participation in school activities. During the year a new boarding house was completed, providing excellent modern living, study and recreational facilities for our live-in pupils.

Throughout the year, many of our peers have travelled overseas to participate in international functions. Brisbane Grammar School is now represented not only all over Australia but throughout the world; one student even competed at Munich in the XX Olympiad. We at Brisbane Grammar School are proud of our school, which is constantly changing to meet the needs of each generation of new students.

Mike Boone.

Our New President — G. C. (Glen) Sanderson

Our new President, G. C. (Glen) Sanderson, entered the Brisbane Grammar School in 1946, after receiving his primary education at the Ascot State School. At B.G.S. his prizes included the Woolcock Prize and Challenge Cup and the O.B.A. Essay Prize, and he represented the School in Rifle Shooting in the Earl Roberts Shield, gaining Full Colours for Rifle Shooting. At the Senior Examination in 1949 he gained 19th place and commuted his Open Scholarship to a State Government Fellowship in Engineering, graduating Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from Queensland University in April 1954.

Apart from two years in the United Kingdom as a Confederation of British Industries Overseas Scholar in 1956–58, he has held engineering appointments in the Queensland Public Service, participating in much of Queensland's development in the design and investigation of harbour works and power stations; he is presently the Senior Engineer (Civil) for the State Electricity Commission of Queensland. His association with the School was renewed during the Centenary Building Fund Appeals, and in 1965 he became General Secretary of the Association, serving three years, rejoining Council in 1969. He lives at Alderley with his wife, Jill, and two sons. "He is concerned that the Association and its members should be conscious of the intense changes taking place in the educational institutions of this State, particularly at the Brisbane Grammar School, and that the Association should be ready to cater for the needs of those presently leaving the School, as it has ever been in the past."

The Year

The 1972 Annual Dinner was held in the School Dining Room at 8 p.m. on Friday, 25th August 1972, attended by the President, Mr. G. C. Baker-Finch, represented the School; some 25 Old Boys who entered the School in 1951 were present. Mr. A. R. Thomas (51) proposed the toast to the Guest of Honour, Mr. G. L. Davies (51), Barrister-at-law. The O.B.A. General Secretary, Mr. C. C. Guy (31), proposed the toast to the School, and Mr. Baker-Finch, replying, announced that history would be made in Third Term 1972 with the appointment of Miss M. Trembath to the B.G.S. Teaching Staff.
