Learning is a life-long experience, and all learning is for life. Therefore, opportunities outside of a rigid school programme are advantageous to students in preparation for the years ahead. At Grammar there are many such possibilities. Few students miss the chance to experience some of the wide range of clubs, music, sports, and other activities which are initiated and sustained by the staff and students at school. In the academic field, the many new educational challenges are providing a healthy environment for students to prepare for tertiary education, careers, and later life.
The scope of activities at Brisbane Grammar School is as great as ever: sport maintains its role; clubs come and go, but the aggregate number seems to increase; musical activities are rapidly growing; Friday afternoon activities have kept going despite some uncertainty about their role earlier in the year; and academically, students and staff have achieved much. With such a range of possible pursuits it is pleasing that once again in 1978, the different interests and ideas of all those in the school have been appreciated. The resulting co-operation is something that places students in good stead for future life.
Because of the active and varied involvement of students and staff in school life, this year's magazine is once again a very respectable size. In presenting the reports of the year's activities it has been our aim to achieve a full coverage of all work done — the aspirations, initiatives and efforts, as well as the successes of students. It is the experience gained by students working towards success, rather than the actual success in award or material terms, that is of importance. For this reason we have tried in every section of the magazine to present an objective account of 1978 at B.G.S.

Important: Unlike other years, the 1978 issue did not print a full office-bearers list. The Old Boys' Section page carries only the Honorary Life Members, the Subscription notice, the "Special Awards" definitions, and a profile of the new General Secretary (the only office-bearer highlighted this year). The President, Vice-Presidents, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Magazine Secretary and Members of Council are not listed in this issue. (The office-bearers page was checked against a rendered image of the scan to confirm this.)

Gap note: The OBA President for 1978 is not recorded in this issue, which is the one year the 1998 Centenary "Past Presidents" roll also leaves blank. So this magazine does not close that gap. For context, the preceding President was R. H. Abbott (elected 1977–78) and the next recorded President is J. A. (John) Dowsett (1979). The 1978 President would need to come from the School's Past Presidents honour board or OBA minutes.
This year the Foundation Day Assembly was held at the School on February 28th.
At the Assembly the President also handed over to the School a cheque for the amount subscribed for the Memorial to the late Joseph Henry Allsopp (on the Staff 1957–1971); with the residue of the now-defunct Grammar Speakers' Club accounts the total was over $1,000, to be used to buy history books for the School Library, each to bear a memorial notification, with a plaque in the Library to commemorate Mr. Allsopp.

In this era, an Old Boy's year designation was the year he entered Grammar; the convention today is the year he finished. A boy who started in 1993 and finished in 1997 was (93) but is now '97.
