From the President (1981)

This year we lost the services of our Magazine Secretary, who kept fine records of the activities of "Old Boys" and whose jottings filled many of the pages of this magazine in past years. To fill the void I asked numerous people to look about them to see what "Old Boys" of the School they might come across in daily life. In following my own advice, I looked at the activities of the Queensland Deaf Society. The Board President is Mr. E. W. Rea (1940).. the Past President is Mr. P. N. Thurecht (1954).. the Society's Solicitors are Feez Ruthning, among whose partners are Howard Stack (1959), who was School Captain in 1962.. the involvement of so many "Old Boys" in this one charity of which I am Director must be some sort of a record — but I invite other submissions for next year.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN'S REPORT (Students' Representative Council)

Suggestions from students and members were sought, and we approached the school administrators with some possibilities of overall school improvement. For example, the suggestion that pupils be provided with test and assignment schedules and excursion details was approved; the venue and type of music for the Sixth Form dance was also changed.

As expected, Open Day proved to be the major obstacle to the S.R.C., and much effort was concentrated into the immediately preceding weeks in an attempt to ensure its success. Many of our innovative ideas for the day were deferred due to their expense (such events included parachute and riding displays); instead we confined ourselves to more economical changes to the programme — a notable one being the combined schools' softball match.

During the year a change was noticed in the school body, as it actively participated in S.R.C. decisions. This is vital for continued progression and improvement of the Students' Representatives, for though changes of a radical nature cannot obviously be accommodated, pupils' stimulation and acceptance of ideas proposed is naturally desirable. The Executive members of the Council, who ardently pursued their many tasks, should be recognised and congratulated for their perseverance, as should all those who assisted the S.R.C. throughout the year.

The Year

Foundation Day, 1981 — Awards

On 27th February 1981 the school held its Foundation Day Assembly, the sixteenth since the Assembly was restored in 1966, marking the 113th year of the school. The scholarship presentations were opened by Mr. Brett Harding, Vice-President of the Old Boys' Association:

The R. H. Roe Scholarship — presented to David Fielding, last year's School Captain (1980).
The J. G. Nowlan Bursary — won by Mark Jeacocke for his performance in the Trustees' Entrance Scholarship Examination; presented by Mr. Brett Harding.
The A. J. Mason Scholarship — presented to Greg Martin (last year's Captain of Rugby and Tennis) by Board member Mr. Norman Traves (Miss Mason, who had attended for the past fifteen years to present the award given in honour of her father A. J. Mason, was unable to attend).
The James Stacey Prize (a bursary of $1,500 over three years) — Scott Bryan Campbell, the 1980 Dux of the School and Lilley Gold Medallist.

In this era, an Old Boy's year designation was the year he entered Grammar; the convention today is the year he finished. A boy who started in 1993 and finished in 1997 was (93) but is now '97.
