Eighty-Eighth Annual Report — President's Report for the year ended 30 June 1986

Presented to the 88th Annual General Meeting (held at the School on Monday 3 March 1986) by F. P. G. Holmes (52), President.

Our Annual General Meeting date is six months earlier than previously, because our financial year now coincides with the calendar year.

In his 1985 Report my predecessor, Mr. Ross Duus, referred to the recommendation of your Council to incorporate. I can now advise that the application to incorporate under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 was lodged in December 1985, and your Council is confident that incorporation will be granted within the coming months. Incorporation removes the previous problems (the Association had held its assets through Trustees, with no limitation of members' liability and no relief from Government charges); property of the Association will vest in a manner similar to that of an incorporated company. I place on record our appreciation to our Vice-President, Mr. Stuart Bale, for his professional skill and special efforts in handling this very important aspect of the Association's future.

The finances of our Association are in a healthy state, and membership is increasing slightly with a healthy intake from the VI Form of 1985. The venue for the 1985 Annual Reunion Dinner was The Brisbane Club; the guest speaker was the Manager of the 1984 Wallabies, Dr. Charles ("Chilla") Wilson, an Old Boy of the School and a former coach of the B.G.S. 1st XV, introduced by Mr. Alec Evans, Assistant Coach on the Wallaby Tour. The joint Cocktail Party with the B.G.G.S.O.G.A. (Girls' Grammar Old Girls) was held at The Brisbane Club in October.

As your President I attended the 118th Foundation Day Assembly and was pleased to present the R. H. Roe Memorial Scholarship to Ian Yang (a brilliant academic record; now studying medicine at UQ, and a member of the Association) and the J. G. Nowlan Bursary to Steven Wilson. At the Foundation Day Sports, the B.G.S.O.B.A. Challenge Shield for swimming was won by the Old Boys in a tight contest (94 points to 92), and the tennis featured such outstanding players as Geoff Masters, Charles Fancutt and Geoff Voller.

Old Boys have always contributed generously to the various Building Appeals (the Centenary Building Fund, and the 1979 Arts Centre Appeal), but since then the B.G.S.O.B.A. has not had a major role within the School community. I am now able to say that we are currently engaged in discussions with the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Professor Don Nicklin, and am confident a formula will emerge to re-establish our Association as a major force within the School community. We enter our 89th year with confidence.

The Year

Foundation Day, 1986 — Awards

At the 118th Foundation Day Assembly (held in the Centenary Hall), the President of the O.B.A. presented:

  • The Reginald Heber Roe Memorial Scholarship (founded by the O.B.A. in 1933, tenable three years) — Ian Yang, who in his final year was Dux of the School and Lilley Gold Medallist, won the English, Cockle (Mathematics), Chemistry, Physics, Economics and John Deeney (Short Story) Prizes, took first prize in the national Pacific Coal Economics Competition, was a Senior A debater and gained Full Colours. (Ian went on to study medicine at UQ.)
  • The A. J. Mason Scholarship — Ross Israel (the 1985 Vice-Captain of the School; First XV, Second Cricket XI), presented by Professor Nicklin, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
  • The J. G. Nowlan Bursary (founded 1953; pays the first term's fees) — Steven Wilson, who performed extremely well in the 1986 Entrance Scholarship Examination.
  • Trustees' Scholarships — P. S. Beckingsale, P. R. Brittain, M. J. Howes, P. J. Maskell and others.

A note on year designations

In this era, an Old Boy's year designation was the year he entered Grammar; the convention today is the year he finished. A boy who started in 1993 and finished in 1997 was (93) but is now '97.

For example: Tom Smith (93) → Tom Smith '97
