1989 Awards (per the President's Report)

The Reginald Heber Roe Scholarship — Robert Finch (the Vice-Captain of the School in 1988; School entry '84).
The J. G. Nowlan Bursary — Paul Bernays, son of Old Boy Richard Bernays (63).
(The A. J. Mason Scholarship was also presented on Foundation Day; the recipient is not separately named in the OBA section.)

Ninety-First Annual Report — President's Report (1989)

The 3rd Annual Report of the Brisbane Grammar School Old Boys' Association Incorporated, by S. T. (Stuart) Bale (55), President.

It was very pleasing to me as President to see so many Old Boys bringing their sons to the School as present boys — in fact in the last intake of students there were 35 sons of Old Boys. As President it gave me great pleasure to attend the 120th Foundation Day to present the bursaries administered by the Association to the Vice-Captain of the School, Robert Finch, and to Paul Bernays, the son of an Old Boy. The Association administers the Reginald Heber Roe and the J. G. Nowlan Bursaries and the Graham Hebden Flint Memorial Prize (presented on Speech Night). I do however indicate that the J. G. Nowlan Bursary is in need of an injection of funds, and to this end I would appeal to all members.

The Year

Foundation Day Assembly, 1989

At the Foundation Day Assembly on 24 February 1989, the Headmaster (Mr. M. A. Howell, A.M.) gave his address — his twenty-second such address since arriving in 1965 — reflecting on the school's 121-year history and the importance of heritage (quoting Allan Bloom's The Closing of the American Mind: "Young people who lack an understanding of the past and a vision of the future live in an impoverished present"). He recalled that the tradition of presenting the Foundation Day awards at a whole-school assembly began in 1967 (previously the Saturday Foundation Day). Foundation Day 1989 was marked by a cricket match between the First XI and the Old Boys, with the Roe, Mason and Nowlan awards presented in the Great Hall.

Notable Old Boys noted in this issue

Dick Johnson (59) — the celebrated Australian touring-car (motor racing) driver: in 1989 his Shell Ultra Team won the Bathurst 1000 (1 October 1989, near all-the-way) and retained the Australian Touring Car Championship; he also gained experience on the US NASCAR circuit. ("Grammar Day at Bathurst" feature.)
David Nucifora (74) — captained the premiership-winning Queensland Reds rugby side (later a prominent rugby coach and high-performance director). Fellow Old Boy forwards in the squad included Cameron Lillicrap (76) and veteran hooker Andy McIntyre (69) — both Wallabies — with Michael Clacher (78) and Bruce Davies (81).

A note on year designations

In this era, an Old Boy's year designation was the year he entered Grammar; the convention today is the year he finished. A boy who started in 1993 and finished in 1997 was (93) but is now '97.
