Old School Ties 1996 Vol 2 No 1

The First XV's season "stalled momentarily" with the Nudgee match. Individual leaders: Tom Thynne (Captain of Rugby), Toby Spencer (Vice-Captain of Rugby), Chris Day (Captain of Soccer). The Under-16 division was strong; cross-country and the Nudgee fixtures were great spectator events. Bruce Wootton (Old Boy on staff) "has been invaluable" to the running programme.

• Ross Maddock (59) — exporting Australian wines to South-East Asia.
• Howard Stack (59), former School Captain and current Chairman of the Board of Trustees, pictured discussing the merger of Feez Ruthning with Allen, Allen and Hemsley.
• Bob McTavish (58) — cox of the 1959 First Eight; became one of the world's leading surfboard shapers (in the era of world champion Midge Farrelly); now at Byron Bay, enjoying renewed success with the resurgence of the Malibu-style board. Featured on Channel Nine's Sports Sunday.
• Roy Blumson (59) — another prominent Byron Bay citizen.
• At the recent Bar Board Examinations, David Finch (85) and Mark Stunden (74) could not be separated in topping the course (Mark a former solicitor); Joel Barnett (63) and Andrew Bale (84) admitted as barristers.
• Jonathan Atherton (74) — on the children's programme Totally Wild, describing his home State of Queensland.
• A note on an Old Boy in Federal politics, who reflected: "Certainly BGS prepared me well for life in politics."
• Claremont Logie Taylor (36), DFC — recognised in connection with the Lions' founder award.
• David Weightman (88) — Atlanta Olympics Rowing Silver Medallist; presented the "Alex Evans Award" (Alex Evans (54); citation read by Alan Bromiley (61)) at the Annual Reunion Dinner.

30 July saw the launch, in the Great Hall, of former Headmaster Maxwell Arthur Howell, OAM's memoirs, Not Without Dust and Heat — one calendar month after his seventieth birthday. The function drew "a veritable who's who of BGS from the last thirty or so years" (among them Barry Montague, Gilbert Case, Charlie Kormendy, Kevin Lynch, Tim Collison). Emeritus Professor Dr George Davies spoke, declaring himself "a Maxist — not a Marxist, but a Maxist." Incumbent Headmaster Dr Peter Lennox spoke of the academic, social and sporting legacies of the Howell years. Dr Howell thanked "his greatest supporter, Mrs Howell," and reflected on how peculiar it felt no longer to be recognised by every boy in the quad — closing in "vintage Max" style.

Photos featured Daniel Bechly (son of Don '58) and John Galton (62); Ian Short (64), Head of Sixth Form and Old Boy; Julian Voller (son of Jon '58) with Jane Harris (daughter of Vivienne, School Registrar); and reunited Old Boys (Richard Bende[r], Col[—], and the class of '86).
