For more than a century it has been something of a rite of passage for Old Boys to study and work abroad. In recent years, Old Boys have increasingly looked to continue their education and build their careers in the US and Asia.
Sam Taylor '22, a former BGS Prefect studying a Bachelor of Economics and Arts at The University of Queensland, received a 2026 New Colombo Plan Scholarship, moving to Hong Kong to learn Mandarin and complete a full-time internship, with a long-term ambition in public service and diplomacy.
Noah Lauder '25, Subject Prize Winner in Chinese, was awarded a full scholarship to Shanghai's Fudan University for his academic excellence in Chinese language. He plans to return to study Engineering at UQ in 2027.
Dr Lucas Hu '18, who has worked as a doctor in both metropolitan and rural areas, is heading to Oxford for a Master of Science in Applied Digital Health, named one of just 18 Australians to receive the prestigious John Monash Scholarship. His interest in healthcare was shaped after he became unwell as a child shortly after migrating from China to Rockhampton.
Roc Woodhouse '25 will commence at the University of Pennsylvania (Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and Business), and Alvin Shen '25 will undertake a Finance degree at Pennsylvania State University's Smeal College of Business. Of the alumni culture at US colleges, Alvin said: "Their loyalty is very similar to the Old Boys of Brisbane Grammar."
