A Rhodes Scholar
Nicholas Salmon '12 was singled out by Headmaster Anthony Micallef as the first BGS student since 2007, and the 25th overall, to become a Rhodes Scholar. He will relocate to Oxford University to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Engineering Science.
Three finalists in the inaugural Brisbane Portrait Prize
Three BGS Old Boys were finalists:
- Scott Breton '99 with Trauma and Grace, of ballet soloist Vito Bernasconi after injury.
- Christopher Inwood '07 with Alec the King, of Alec Knight, the first Australian male in the New York City Ballet.
- Daniel Sherington '14 with Anthony, of BGS Headmaster Anthony Micallef.
A family business turns one hundred
The Clarke family business, TC Clarke & Son, celebrated 100 years in October, having constructed several heritage-listed buildings in Queensland. The business passed from TC (Thomas Charles) to Morris in 1945, Geoff in 1970, and soon to Scotty. Morris '39, Geoff '64 and Scotty '99 are Old Boys. Geoff's grandsons Tom, Alex, Freddie and Harry are enrolled to attend BGS.
Major benefactors
Named in the BGS Timeline of Giving: Matt McLennan '86 pledged US$500,000 towards the boarding fundraising campaign for the Junior and Senior boarding houses; Simon Fenwick '87 donated $1.4M in 2015 to fund a full boarding bursary for an Indigenous or regional student; and David Malouf AO '50 donated more than 50 artworks, including works from prominent Australian artists.
