On 16 August 1996, Brisbane Grammar marked the centenary of the death of Sir Charles Lilley, "this great Queenslander who had an abiding interest in the school as Trustee and benefactor, and whose family has continued this strong association to this day." The commemoration took the form of a scholarly seminar on aspects of Sir Charles's life, held in the gallery of the Centenary Hall.
Speakers included Pat Comben, Professor Malcolm Thomis, Dr Denis Cryle, Mrs Judith Hancock, Dr Tom Watson, Mr Justice Dowsett and Geoff Swan. Old Boy Angus Lilley '51, a great-grandson of Sir Charles, spoke on his great-grandfather and the family.
Sir Charles Lilley was a Premier and Chief Justice of Queensland, and an early champion of free, secular education.
