The 1987 School Magazine

Brisbane Grammar has always been renowned as a successful school and 1987 is no exception. Enthusiastic commitment by students in both the areas of sport and academic pursuits has provided the school with another very rewarding year. This, our one hundred and sixtieth publication, serves as a record of the achievements of all Brisbane Grammar students in their chosen fields. Contributions of any nature are encouraged and the diversity of articles in the magazine is testimony to this. Just some of the additions this year include our increased number of sporting and colour photographs, and feature articles on Moogerah and the one hundred years of Harlin House. All members of the committee trust the 1987 School Magazine will serve as a fitting record of a very rewarding school year.

Presented to the 89th Annual General Meeting (held at the School on Monday 2 March 1987) by F. P. G. (Graham) Holmes (52), the outgoing President. This was the Association's first A.G.M. as an Incorporated Body. (S. T. Bale becomes President for 1987.)

This meeting is historic in that it is our first A.G.M. as an Incorporated Body. The value of the R. H. Roe Memorial Scholarship has been raised from $150 per year to $250, made possible by the efforts of Dr. Charles Roe (32), the eldest grandson of R. H. Roe, and your Association — an amount of $5,786 was raised, and the capital account of the fund is now $10,803. We are indebted to Dr. Roe for his magnificent efforts; the Scholarship now makes a valued contribution towards University text-book outlays.

The outstanding social event of 1986 was the Annual Reunion Dinner, billed as the "Grammar 500" Black Tie Dinner with a mystery Guest Speaker, held in the Grand Ballroom at the Sheraton Hotel. The Association is much indebted to Mr. Brett Heading, Chairman of the Grammar 500 Committee, with Mr. Ian Whittle, Mr. Steven Acworth and Mr. Peter Bruton singled out for special praise. Attendance was 330 — the previous best-attended dinner was in the School's Centenary Year (about 220 Old Boys); the average annual attendance over the last five years had been 90.

As your President I attended the 119th Foundation Day Assembly and was pleased to present the R. H. Roe Memorial Scholarship to Murray Walters, the School Captain of 1986 and a most worthy recipient (now studying medicine at UQ), and the J. G. Nowlan Bursary to John Story.

The O.B.A. is, and should always be, a major entity within the School Community. Our first President was the Headmaster, Mr. R. H. Roe, who over a period of 19 years served as President on five occasions; the School has had nine Headmasters, of whom four served one or more terms as President of the O.B.A. The Board recognizes that, henceforth, some independent funding must be available (other than fees and Government contributions), and your Association has had some involvement in these discussions and is well placed to participate in any ventures.

I have now completed two terms as your President and, although I am not seeking re-election, I wish to remain an active member. I thank the Council, in particular our industrious Secretary Mr. Roger Cater and our conscientious Treasurer Mr. Neil Summerson, and our part-time Secretariat Mrs. Mary Larsen. The Association is in a very sound state as we commence our 90th year.
