Obituaries (Vales):

• Sir Charles Spry (Charles Chambers Fowell Spry, 1924) — appointed Director of Military Intelligence in 1946 and, by Sir Robert Menzies, the second Director-General of ASIO in 1950 (a four-year appointment that lasted nineteen years); he played an important role in establishing Australia's postwar foreign and domestic security services (ASIS and ASIO). Remembered above all for his Cold War work.
• Leonard Teale (born Leonard Thiele, 1935) — the well-known Australian actor, best remembered for the television series Homicide and the dramatisation of Seven Little Australians; a member of the Premiership-winning 1937 BGS Athletics Team; served with the RAAF in WWII. (He visited the School in 1977 to recite Australian verse.)
• J. S. D. (Don) Edwards — former Second Master and Acting Head; came to BGS in 1956, Senior Master (Deputy Head) and Master-in-Charge of the Middle School from 1959; a renowned mathematics teacher and rowing coach (the 1960 Head of the River crew won 6 of 9 races). Passed away 20 December 1993.
• John Roe (grandson of R. H. Roe, son of Arthur Stanley Roe; brother of Dr. Charles Roe '32) — died 10 September 1994.

Other notable Old Boys:

• Dick Johnson (59) — third Bathurst 1000 win (1981, 1988 and 1994); a remarkable race in which the lead changed 7 times in the first 30 laps, won from 10th on the grid.
• Ross Fitzgerald — Associate Professor of History and Politics, Griffith University; historian, author and broadcaster, then writing a biography of past pupil Fred Paterson (15) — Rhodes Scholar, ARU official and prominent radical lawyer (Australia's only Communist member of parliament).
• Dr. Michael Cohn — President of the Australian Medical Association in Queensland (pictured in the Gold Medallion at the Ecumenical Centenary Church Service, with Professor John Pearn).
