Obituaries

• Harry Laurence Ward (1915) — d. 7 November 1996. Born Condamine, 6 November 1902; entered BGS in 1915 as a boarder; matriculated 1919; articled as a surveyor. Married Jean (a nursing sister) whom he met in Singapore in 1928; the family lived as expatriates in the Malay Peninsula 1930–42. With the Japanese invasion of 1942 his wife and daughter were evacuated to Australia (his sons already at school here); Harry stayed on with the Singapore Royal Artillery Volunteers (a militia he joined in 1926) and was imprisoned by the Japanese — Changi, then the Burma-Siam Railway — never disclosing his professional background to his captors. Repatriated October 1945; returned to Malaya May 1946; appointed Chief Surveyor of Singapore in 1950, responsible for much of the post-war reconstruction surveying; retired from Singapore 1952. (Great-grandfather of Jon Milis's son, above.)
• Maurie Arvier — Captain of the Rifle Club; held the rank of Captain in the 2/10 Field Artillery; worked on the Captain Cook Bridge and at Rocklea; a tutor and demonstrator in the [University] Surveying Department.
