At the Valedictory Dinner, Alan Bromiley (Master-in-Charge of Rowing) was asked who the best oarsman he had coached at Grammar was. "Brow responded without hesitating: 'David Weightman. He's a freak! He will row for Australia at the Olympics!'"
In 1996, at Atlanta, David Weightman became an Olympian, representing Australia in the Coxless Pairs and, partnered by Robert Scott, winning an Olympic Silver Medal — "the dream of a 16-year-old Grammar schoolboy become reality." Weightman, a former pupil of the author's PE class, attributes his success to "dedication and sheer hard work… his feet are firmly planted on the ground."
